Mexico, NY

Mexico is an Oswego County village with the unusual distinction of sharing its name with the surrounding town. The 2020 census counted 1,531 residents. It was incorporated in 1851, first under the name Mexicoville, and grew along Main Street as farms, mills, shops, churches, and the Mexico Academy gathered around it. The railroad arrived in 1866, giving local farmers a way to move crops and helping the village become the working center of the town. The current layout still makes the old story easy to read.

New York routes 3, 69, and 104 meet around the village, and the Mexico Village Historic District preserves the older core. Beck's Hotel, the restored Starr Clark Tin Shop, the downtown park, and the Little Salmon River give Main Street a few different eras to hold at once. Mexico's local scoop is a village where the name can confuse outsiders, but the map is simple: village at the center, town around it, and a long Main Street story running through both.
