Mi-Wuk Village, CA

Mi-Wuk Village is a small Tuolumne County community on State Route 108 in the Sierra Nevada foothills, with pine forest and elevation shaping the setting. The community had 935 residents in 2020. Developer Harry Hoeffler gave it the name Mi-Wuk Village in 1955, honoring the Mi-Wuk people, and the nearby Me-Wuk history reaches much deeper than the subdivision-era name. Highway 108 is the main thread, carrying traffic between the foothill communities and the Sonora Pass country. Local life is spread along the highway through homes, cabins, a fire station, small businesses, and forest roads.

The Mi-Wuk–Sugar Pine Fire Protection District serves the area from its Highway 108 station, and the community’s high-country setting puts Stanislaus National Forest and the roads toward Pinecrest and Sonora Pass in the larger daily orbit. Mi-Wuk Village is a mountain service community where the road, forest, weather, and fire district matter as much as any town center. Winter weather can change the feel of the road from one season to the next.
