Miami, AZ

Miami is a Gila County town on the northeastern slope of the Pinal Mountains, adjacent to Globe and near the San Carlos Apache Reservation. It had 1,541 residents in the 2020 census. The town sits in Arizona’s Copper Corridor, with old downtown buildings, highway connections, and mine-country hills shaping the local map. Tonto National Forest surrounds the area except to the east, while Copper Mountain Community Transit connects Miami and Globe.

Bullion Plaza School opened in 1923 as a grammar school for Mexican and Apache children during segregation. Miami schools desegregated in 1950, and the former school now houses the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum. The Town of Miami purchased the building in 1995 and approved its museum use in 1998; it was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mining exhibits, mineral collections, and a 35-ton haul truck on the lawn connect the building to the region’s copper work. Miami is an Arizona mining town where Mexican, Apache, Slavic, and Italian histories share a public museum beside the old copper corridor.
