Middleburg, PA

Middleburg is Snyder County’s seat in the Susquehanna River Valley, laid out along Middle Creek and surrounded by the farms and ridges of central Pennsylvania. The town began with earlier Native presence and settler farms; in the late 1700s it was known as Swinefordstown after tavern keeper John Albright Swineford. Frederick Evans laid out the town in 1800, and the name shortened to Middleburg in the 1820s. The borough incorporated in 1856, and the county courthouse now sits among the places that give the town its civic role.

Middleburg has a good mix of county-seat business and small-town gathering spots. The old stone jail and sheriff’s office, courthouse, library, historical society, veterans’ monuments, and Firemen’s Field all sit in the same broader story. There is also a small lake with a playground, pavilion, dog park, and ball field, while the livestock auction, farms, and nearby Shade Mountain country keep the working landscape close. Midd-West schools serve the borough. Middleburg is a place where courthouse errands, Middle Creek history, and familiar community events share a compact Pennsylvania town map.
