About Middletown

Middletown grew on the west bank of the Connecticut River at a Wangunk village called Mattabeseck. English settlers retained that name when they incorporated a town in 1650, then renamed it in 1653. The settlement developed first as a sailing port and later as an industrial center; the formerly separate city and town consolidated in 1923, creating today's extensive municipal boundaries. In 2020, Middletown had 47,717 residents across 41.02 square miles. Route 9 now runs between Main Street and the river, a useful orientation point but also a physical division between downtown and the waterfront. Main Street carries much of Middletown's public calendar. The city scheduled its 2026 farmers market at Union Green on Fridays from late June through October, and annual PrideFEST brings a march, rally, vendors, performances, and an evening dance to downtown on the first Saturday in June.

Wesleyan University sits just west of the corridor. Its Center for the Arts presents more than 150 performances, exhibitions, and programs each year, including public events, the Zilkha Gallery, and the Navaratri Festival, an annual Indian music and dance tradition dating to 1976. At Harbor Park, rowing teams, an annual regatta, fishing, and July Fourth fireworks put the Connecticut River to public use, but access is not seamless: the city identifies the lack of a direct pedestrian connection from downtown, limited event parking, and too few everyday activities as reasons the riverfront remains underused.
