Midlothian, MD

Midlothian is an Allegany County census-designated place on the eastern base of Big Savage Mountain, about two miles southwest of Frostburg and beside Interstate 68's Exit 33. It was once called Midlothian Junction, a name that fits the rail history under the settlement. Cumberland Coal and Iron built the Bowery iron furnaces here in 1868, using nearby iron ore, limestone, and coal. The furnaces made pig iron from 1874 to 1880, and a rail spur carried the product toward Cumberland.

Timber followed the iron industry. The Juniata Lumber Company built a circular sawmill at the end of a three-foot-gauge line that ran twelve miles into Garrett County along Big Savage Mountain. At its peak the mill produced 25,000 board feet of railroad ties and dimensional lumber each day; it closed in 1913. Midlothian's present map is carried by the 21543 mailing area, Midlothian Road, and the I-68 connection to Frostburg, with Big Savage Mountain still rising behind the former iron-and-lumber junction.
