Milan, NM

Milan is the smaller neighbor on the north side of Grants in Cibola County, laid along Interstate 40 and old New Mexico 122, the former Route 66. Salvador Milan incorporated the village in 1957, just as the Grants area was moving through its railroad, uranium, and postwar growth years. That gives Milan a different feel from an older New Mexico plaza town: it is a roadside village shaped by industry, housing, and its position beside the county seat. Exit 79 puts the community straight into the interstate flow.

Today Milan Elementary is part of Grants/Cibola County Schools, and the village's everyday map runs between homes, local businesses, the old highway, and I-40. Cibola County Correctional Center is also a major employer and houses more than 1,000 federal prisoners, an unusual piece of the local working landscape. Grants sits immediately south, while the roads open west toward Cibola County's rural communities and Pueblo country. Milan is small, but it has a clear role: a postwar village on the edge of Grants, with Route 66 history under the newer interstate traffic.
