Milbridge, ME

Milbridge village sits on the west side of the tidal Narraguagus River in Washington County, with U.S. Route 1 running through the center. Route 1 heads north to Cherryfield and west toward Ellsworth; Route 1A crosses the river and continues east toward Harrington and Machias. The road-and-water layout has shaped the place for generations. The river reaches Narraguagus Bay, and its navigation channel serves a fishing fleet, recreational boats, and the blueberry and sardine-canning businesses around Milbridge and nearby Wyman.

Before the roads improved, boats and steamboats carried people and goods along the coast. The town’s history places Wyman at the center when water travel dominated, with downtown Milbridge taking that role as roads became more important in the twentieth century. Today the town office is on School Street, and McClellan Park keeps the riverfront in the town’s current map. Milbridge still joins a tidal river, coastal highways, working waterfront activity, and the seasonal commerce of Washington County’s blueberry country.
