Millers Falls, MA

Millers Falls is a Franklin County census-designated place split between Montague and Erving, where the Millers River runs alongside the old Mohawk Trail corridor. The settlement began as Grout’s Corner in 1824, named for first settler Martin Grout, then changed character when railroads reached the area in the 1860s. The New London Northern and Vermont & Massachusetts lines met here, and the waterpower of the falls helped draw mills. The Millers Falls Company, established on the river in 1868, eventually gave the village its present name and became known for hand tools. Millers Falls is a river-and-rail place whose name remembers both the falls and the factory that followed.
