Millersburg, PA

Millersburg is a Dauphin County borough at the mouth of Wiconisco Creek, where it meets the Susquehanna just north of Berry Mountain. Daniel Miller laid out the town in 1807 after buying the land in 1790, reserving space for churches, a town square, and a riverside park. The 2020 census counted 2,541 residents. U.S. 209 ends here, giving Millersburg a useful road connection, but the river remains the older organizing feature. You can still read the town as a place built around a crossing, a creek, and a market square.

Coal, canal, railroad, and ferry traffic all passed through Millersburg. The Lykens Valley Railroad connected local mines to the Wiconisco Canal and Pennsylvania Railroad, and MYO Park occupies ground where coal once moved between canal boats and rail cars. The riverfront still has the Millersburg Ferry, a wooden stern-wheel boat with a long local history, plus a historic Queen Anne railroad station. Market Square hosts events around the gazebo, while the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art adds trails, a footbridge, and environmental education just east of town. Harrisburg and Sunbury are close enough for larger errands, but Millersburg keeps its own small river-town rhythm: coal routes turned into trails, an old ferry still working the water, and a square that remains the center of the map.
