Millerton, NY

Millerton formed after the railroad reached the area in 1851, and the village took its name from civil engineer Sidney Miller. Three rail lines soon met here, turning the northeastern Dutchess County village into an agricultural and commercial hub; nearby Irondale added an iron foundry that employed about 150 people by 1882. The railroads are gone now, but one line lives on as the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, which runs through the village toward Wassaic. Millerton still has the old rail-town bones - hotels, Main Street blocks, and a village grid near the Connecticut and Massachusetts lines. It is Hudson Valley country with a railroad past you can still walk.
