Sitting along the Dan River near the Virginia border, Milton began in the late 1700s as a bustling riverfront trading hub known as Mill Town. The town's most famous legacy comes from Thomas Day, a celebrated free Black cabinetmaker and entrepreneur who opened his shop here in 1827. His handcrafted furniture and interior woodwork became prized across the region, and visitors can still explore his original workshop at the restored Union Tavern.
