Miltona, MN

Miltona is a city in Douglas County, Minnesota, named for nearby Lake Miltona. Three lakes - Miltona, Irene, and Vermont - shape the area, and the Red River Trail crossed this part of the county before the town's post office opened in 1873. Early schools used log cabins and a granary, while summer cabins and fishing clubs drew people to the lakes. That combination of farm country, water, and seasonal visitors gives Miltona a map that reaches beyond its short main street.

On July 18, 1970, a tornado crossed Lake Miltona Golf Club and the city center, damaging or destroying the lumberyard, cafe, depot, gas station, elevator, homes, businesses, and farms. Miltona rebuilt around the same lakes and highways, with Minnesota 29 and County Highway 14 passing through town. The city marks that turning point with Tornado Days each July, and the celebration sits alongside the everyday geography of residents who work in Alexandria or Parkers Prairie and return to the lakeside community. Miltona's present-day story is tied to water, roads, and a civic memory that has a date on the calendar.
