Mineville, NY

Mineville is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Moriah, five miles northwest of Port Henry in Essex County's Adirondack Park. The name tells the central story: iron ore mines in the hills shaped Mineville, Witherbee, and Port Henry into one working district. The ore moved downhill by railroad to Port Henry, where Lake Champlain and canal routes carried it toward larger markets. Mineville and Witherbee developed as company towns, and houses built from blocks made with iron-ore tailings still line parts of the community.

Moriah's current map still ties the hamlets together. Port Henry holds town offices, water and sewer departments, and the Iron Center Museum, which reopened for the 2026 season to interpret the mining district. Mineville sits inland along County Roads 6 and 7, with the Adirondack landscape between it and the lake. The work has shifted from large-scale mining to town services, industrial property, and recreation, yet the old ore corridor remains visible in the street plan, building materials, and rail connection to Port Henry.
