South Burlington, VT

South Burlington is constructing the downtown it long lacked. After separating from Burlington as a town in 1865, the community incorporated as a city in 1971 and developed around several corridors rather than an inherited center. South Burlington had 20,292 residents in the 2020 census, and the July 2025 estimate was 21,394. The city adjoins Burlington and reaches Lake Champlain at its western edge, but its landscape also includes commercial corridors, residential neighborhoods, and open land. Market Street now gathers several everyday institutions in one place. A building completed in 2021 combines the South Burlington Public Library, City Hall, and Senior Center; the library added Sunday hours in January 2026 and is now open seven days a week. Next to it, City Center Park has a play area, public art, wetlands, accessible walking paths, and a north-south bike path.

A boardwalk completed in May 2026 connected the park across its wetlands to Garden Street and Barrett Street, while Green Mountain Transit changes introduced in August 2025 placed Market Street on Routes 1 and 11 and created 15-minute peak service to downtown Burlington. Larger natural spaces remain part of the local routine beyond City Center. Red Rocks Park contains a public Lake Champlain beach and several miles of walking, running, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing trails. Wheeler Nature Park adds unpaved trails, a recreation-path connection, a fenced dog area, and winter skiing and snowshoeing terrain. Residents therefore use a newly concentrated civic district alongside older lakefront and upland recreation areas.
