About Minocqua

Minocqua is an Oneida County census-designated place inside the Town of Minocqua, in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin's lake-and-forest country. The town became an official township in 1889, and the name is traced to the Ojibwe word Ninocqua, described as meaning noon-day rest. Early Minocqua grew around logging; by 1891 the town had saloons, hotels, general stores, a market, and about fifteen homes. The CDP now has its own post office and ZIP code, 54548. Minocqua is a Wisconsin place where a small census label sits inside a much older town story.
