Minong, WI

Minong is a Washburn County village within the Town of Minong, at the meeting of U.S. Highway 53 and Wisconsin Highway 77. The 2020 census counted 548 residents. The name comes from Ojibwe and is commonly translated as “blueberry place” or “good place,” linking the village to the northern Wisconsin landscape around it. County lands, lakes, and forest roads surround the community, and multiple-use trails run through the area each season.

Minong’s identity is tied to access into the woods and water. Fishing is part of the local draw, with area lakes and a kids’ fishing pond at the east end of town, while the highways make the village a practical stop in northwestern Washburn County. The village and the larger town share a name but serve different roles: one is the incorporated center, the other the surrounding rural township. Together they form a small Northwoods community built around trails, lakes, roads, and the Ojibwe name that remains on the map.
