Mission, SD

Mission is a city on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in northern Todd County, South Dakota, and the largest incorporated community in the county. The 2020 census counted 1,156 residents. U.S. Routes 18 and 83 meet here, making Mission the practical road center for a wide reservation landscape. The city’s name comes from the late-nineteenth-century missions established to educate and assist Sicangu Lakota and other Native people, so the name itself belongs to the reservation’s institutional history.

Sinte Gleska University gives Mission a major educational and cultural presence. Its Lakota Studies Department centers Lakota language, history, and culture, while the city also hosts the Todd County School District and other tribal, federal, and local agencies. The Oyate Trail adds a road-and-history connection through town. Rosebud, the tribal capital, is an unincorporated community larger than Mission, a distinction that helps place the city within the reservation’s civic geography. Mission is a small city with a regional role built from highways, tribal education, and the everyday work of the Rosebud community.
