Mission, SD

Mission is a small town in south-central South Dakota on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. With around 1,200 residents, it serves as the main crossroads for Todd County where U.S. Routes 18 and 83 meet. It is a convenient stop for travelers across the plains and a central spot for neighbors to pick up supplies and run errands. The town traces its roots back to late-nineteenth-century mission schools and has grown into an important everyday hub for the Sicangu Lakota community.

Education and local services shape much of daily life here. Mission is home to Sinte Gleska University, a tribal college known for its strong Lakota language and cultural programs. The town also hosts the Todd County School District, health facilities, and several regional offices. While tribal headquarters are located just down the road in Rosebud, Mission provides the schools, shops, and highway access that keep the wider community connected.
