Mizpah, NJ

Mizpah is an Atlantic County census-designated place in the Mays Landing section of Hamilton Township, a South Jersey community with an unusual beginning. In 1892 the Mizpah Agricultural and Industrial Company acquired land near Mays Landing with the stated aim of creating a Russian-Jewish commune. The plan joined agriculture and industry: a factory, thirty houses, and a settlement for people who were expected to work the land and build a new community together. Mizpah belonged to the larger wave of Jewish agricultural colonies that took root across southern New Jersey.

The experiment did not become a lasting colony, but the name stayed attached to the roads and homes around the original site. Today U.S. Route 40 runs through Mizpah, with Mays Landing and the wider Hamilton Township map close by. The surrounding landscape is a mix of woods, fields, and small roadside businesses, including the longtime barbecue stand Uncle Dewey's. Hamilton Township School District and Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District serve the area. Mizpah's character comes from the contrast between its modest present-day footprint and the ambitious communal plan that gave the place its name.
