About Modena

In 2020, Modena had 544 residents along the west branch of Brandywine Creek, just south of Coatesville. The borough grew from land that belonged to East Fallowfield Township and was formed in 1921, as the Coatesville area was becoming the county’s main industrial and commercial center. Earlier references called the settlement Modeville, after a local Mode family, before the name settled into Modena. That mix of creek, old roads, farms, and nearby industry still gives the borough its particular shape.

The town’s local story is full of practical institutions. Modena Fire Company once used the former public school as a temporary home, a detail that says a lot about how small Pennsylvania communities have made buildings serve several generations. Along the creek, the borough now has 3.87 acres of passive open space, combining a municipal parcel with a once-overlooked waterfront lot. Residents are part of Coatesville Area School District, and Coatesville remains the place for many larger services and connections. Modena itself is compact, but the Brandywine corridor, historic barns, and tree-lined water give the borough a distinct landscape.
