Modoc, SC

Modoc is a small, quiet community in McCormick County, tucked into the pine woods near the South Carolina–Georgia border. Originally known as Bountwell, the settlement took the name Modoc in the 1880s when the Augusta and Knoxville Railroad laid tracks through the area. Today, it offers a peaceful rural setting where life centers on scenic backroads, open space, and a relaxed pace.

Outdoor living is the main highlight here, with J. Strom Thurmond Lake right down the road for boating, fishing, and waterfront camping. The historic train corridor now serves as the Savannah Valley Rail Trail, giving residents a shaded path for walking and cycling through the countryside. While the community offers plenty of privacy, a straightforward drive on Highway 221 connects you to local shops in McCormick and the broader healthcare and retail hubs in Augusta.
