Molino, FL

Molino is an Escambia County census-designated place north of Pensacola, a place whose name carries a little more history than its current footprint suggests. The community grew around the crossings, farms, and mills of the county’s north end; local historians trace an early Spanish-mission connection and a later life as an important mill town during Florida’s industrial era. At the 2020 census, the population was 1,296, and U.S. 29 keeps Molino tied to Pensacola, Atmore, and the rural stretches toward the Alabama line.

Much of the community’s memory is gathered at the Molino Community Center, the old Molino School on Highway 95A, where the Molino Mid-County Historical Society meets and runs a museum. Its collecting trips have covered sawmills, old cemeteries, brickyards, early churches, and schools—exactly the scattered evidence that makes north-county history feel personal. Molino has no incorporated downtown government to frame the story; its character comes through the schoolhouse, the highway, the surrounding pine-and-farm landscape, and the people who keep turning up to record what used to be here.
