Monette, AR

Monette is a Craighead County city in Buffalo Island, a Northeast Arkansas farming region shaped by railroads, flat fields, and the St. Francis River lowlands. The city began in 1898 when the Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad bypassed Stottsville and drew settlers and businesses to a new town along the line. The first train arrived that August, and Monette incorporated two years later. Highway 18 and Highway 139 now carry the everyday traffic, but the railroad is still the reason the city is where it is.

Monette is headquarters for Buffalo Island Central School District, which serves students in Craighead and Mississippi counties and graduates them from the Monette-based high school. Kohn Memorial Library adds a Crowley Ridge Regional Library branch, while the St. Francis River and nearby bottomland country give the city its ecological setting. Farming remains the main backdrop, with Leachville, Manila, Black Oak, and other Buffalo Island communities linked by school, work, and road trips. Monette's story is a classic Delta-edge pattern: a railroad relocation became a city, and the school district now gives the wider island a shared center.
