Monroe City, IN

Monroe City is a Knox County town in southwestern Indiana, with 502 residents in the 2020 census. It sits in Harrison Township southeast of Vincennes, in farm country near the White River. The town’s local map is tied to South Knox School Corporation, whose schools serve the rural area around the community. Main Street and the former Monroe City High School, now used as the Blue Jeans Community Center, give the settlement a civic center with a school-town past.

Monroe City was established on August 29, 1856, and named for founder Monroe Alton. Its story is the story of a small Knox County place that grew around a named town center, a high school, and the roads leading toward Vincennes and the river. The old high-school building’s continued community use keeps that history visible, while South Knox Elementary and South Knox Middle/High connect the town to the wider school district.
