About Monroe
Monroe is a small city near the Jasper-Marion county line, east of Des Moines and tied to the Prairie City-Monroe school system. The 2020 census counted 1,967 residents. Adam Tool laid the town out in 1851 as Tool's Point, but the name soon changed to Monroe. That little naming detour is the sort of thing you run into in Iowa towns: the original founder stays in the story even after the sign changes. PCM Community School District gives Monroe an everyday role beyond its city limits, with Monroe Elementary and the high school campus serving the Prairie City-Monroe area.

The town's current departments and small-business core keep the civic side close at hand, while Jasper and Marion counties meet around it. The town's size makes the contrast easy to notice: one school system, two counties, and a short drive to the metro area's larger services. Monroe's local scoop is a county-line town with a school-centered map, a founder's name hiding in the first chapter, and just enough history to make a short stop interesting.
