About Monroe
Monroe is a historic city and the county seat of Monroe County, Michigan, located on the western shore of Lake Erie. Founded in 1784 when the Potawatomi tribe granted land to French-Canadian settler Francis Navarre, the city was the site of the Battle of Frenchtown during the War of 1812. The community of approximately 20,300 is also famous as the birthplace of the La-Z-Boy recliner company, which was founded here in 1927. Monroe sits twenty miles northeast of Toledo and forty miles southwest of Detroit.
