The Fox River runs right through the heart of Montgomery, bridging the community's nineteenth-century roots with its modern suburban growth. Settled along the riverbanks in the 1830s by pioneers like Jacob Carpenter and Daniel Gray, the village grew up around foundries, mills, and later major manufacturing plants like Western Electric. Today, you can still feel that heritage along River Street, where historic homes and local storefronts sit just steps from the water. As the village expanded westward toward Orchard Road and Route 30, newer subdivisions and commercial parks filled in, creating a quiet community where industrial roots comfortably coexist with family-friendly neighborhoods.

Montgomery has grown to around 22,000 residents, straddling both Kane and Kendall counties in Chicago's far western suburbs. Getting around is fairly straightforward, with Routes 25 and 31 flanking the river and Orchard Road connecting drivers quickly to Interstate 88. While Montgomery does not have its own Metra train stop, commuters typically make the short drive north to the Aurora station to catch the BNSF line into downtown Chicago. Because local traffic can bottleneck around train tracks, school zones, and river bridges during rush hour, it is always a good idea to test your daily drive from any specific neighborhood you are considering.

Because the village spans two counties and several townships, local services and school assignments can vary quite a bit from one street to the next. Depending on your address, kids might attend schools in the Oswego, West Aurora, Yorkville, East Aurora, or Kaneland districts. Library and park district access also differ across subdivisions, so checking the parcel details for a specific home is essential. If you are shopping for a home close to the Fox River or Blackberry Creek, you will also want to look closely at flood zone maps, check grading around the foundation, and make sure any basement has a reliable sump pump with a battery backup.

When the weather warms up, local life naturally gravitates toward the riverfront. Montgomery Park, set along the west bank near downtown, serves as a favorite gathering spot with playgrounds, courts, and direct access to the scenic Fox River Trail for walking and biking. Every August, the entire town gathers here for Montgomery Fest, a three-day celebration filled with live music, food vendors, family entertainment, and a carnival. Even though neighbors in different subdivisions might attend different schools or pay taxes to different districts, community traditions along the river give everyone a shared sense of hometown pride.
