Oswego, IL

Oswego began at a useful place to cross the Fox River. A limestone shelf forms a naturally smooth ford near the mouth of Waubonsie Creek, a route used first by Indigenous people and later by settlers arriving in the 1830s. Lewis Judson and Levi Arnold laid out a village called Hudson in 1835; after its post office received the name Lodi, residents selected Oswego in 1837. The river and historic street grid still shape downtown, but the village has expanded far beyond that early crossing. Its population rose from 3,875 in 1990 to 34,585 in the 2020 census, making Oswego the largest municipality in Kendall County, with a small portion extending into Will County. The Fox River remains part of ordinary recreation rather than merely a view. The Oswegoland Park District maintains a 3.1-mile local segment of the Fox River Trail, and Hudson Crossing Park provides a downtown riverfront gathering place with reservable shelter space.

Wine on the Fox uses that park for a spring weekend of Illinois wines, food, music, and family activities. Prairie Point Community Park combines four ballfields, a splash pad, skate park, sled hill, basketball, sand volleyball, trails, shelters, and picnic areas across 65.4 acres. Nearby PrairieFest Park hosts the four-day PrairieFest over Father's Day weekend; the 2026 program paired free concerts with a parade, races, an inclusive carnival, touch-a-truck activities, and a community band performance. The village also programs free concerts and family movies through its Venue 1012 summer series and closes downtown streets for the annual Christmas Walk. At the Oswego campus of the public library, a busy 2026 schedule ranged from family storytimes and teen volunteering to adult game nights, genealogy consultations, book discussions, and an off-site walking book club.
