Montreal, WI

Montreal is a city in Iron County, Wisconsin, on the West Fork of the Montreal River near the Michigan border. The 2020 census counted 801 residents. The neighborhood of Gile lies within the city and keeps its own post office, while the former community of Germania was also absorbed into Montreal. Forest, river valleys, and old mine ground set the backdrop for a city shaped by northern Wisconsin’s iron country. Gile and Germania give the city a neighborhood history made of annexation and separate addresses.

Montreal began as the Village of Hamilton and became the city of Montreal on April 1, 1924. The name came from the Montreal Mining Company, which worked iron-ore mines in the area during the late nineteenth century; the company itself took its name from the nearby river. Mining, railroads, and neighborhood settlements built the city’s early map. Montreal today carries that history through the river, the Gile neighborhood, the historic company location, and the roads through Iron County.
