About Montrose

Montrose is a Genesee County city surrounded by Montrose Charter Township, with the Flint River cutting through the township nearly down the middle. The city occupies about a square mile at the center of the larger six-mile-square township, but the two governments are separate. The township formed from Vienna Township in 1847 under the name Pewonigowink, then became Montrose in 1848. Montrose is mid-Michigan in a precise map-reader’s way: city in the middle, river across the township, and the county edge to the northwest.
