Montross, VA

Montross had 553 residents in 2020 and has served as the Westmoreland County seat since the late seventeenth century. The town runs along Route 3, also known as Kings Highway, in Virginia’s Northern Neck, with the courthouse green at the center of the street plan. The Montross Historic District follows that road and includes the courthouse, former jail, military memorials, Virginia Presidents’ Garden, and the Inn at Montross, also known as Spence’s Tavern. The district joined the National Register in 2023.

The Historic Courthouse now serves as a county visitor center, with rotating exhibits, the Henry Hungerford Library, and a genealogy center. Westmoreland’s colonial and Revolutionary-era story is close by: the Leedstown Resolutions were signed by 115 local men in 1766, and nearby Stratford Hall and George Washington Birthplace National Monument draw the county’s larger history into the picture. Westmoreland State Park reaches the Potomac River, while Westmoreland County Public Schools keep Montross tied to present-day family life. It is still a working county seat, with court offices, old taverns, and Route 3 traffic sharing the same compact center.
