Moorefield, WV

Moorefield is Hardy County's seat, set where the South Branch Potomac meets its South Fork in West Virginia's South Branch Valley. The 2020 census counted 2,527 residents. The town was chartered in 1777 on land owned by Conrad Moore, which accounts for the name and the courthouse-centered role it still carries. The river junction is the physical giveaway: Moorefield grew around a crossing point that also gives the town its shape today. That pair of rivers is still the first thing a newcomer notices on arrival.

The valley funnels roads through town. U.S. 220 runs north-south, U.S. 48 crosses east-west, and state routes 28 and 55 overlap parts of those corridors. That makes Moorefield a practical meeting point for Hardy County, with the courthouse and town offices close to the water that first made the site useful. There is an old Appalachian pattern here: a county seat at a river junction, carrying government, trade, and everyday errands for the surrounding valley.
