Mooreland, OK

Mooreland is a Woodward County town ten miles east of Woodward, laid out on the open country north of the North Canadian River. The Southern Kansas Railway reached the area in 1886–87, and the Cherokee Outlet opening in 1893 brought the homesteaders and country stores that turned a rail stop into a town. The local history remembers an early name, Dail City, before the town settled on Mooreland, with the final “e” made official in 1902. The line’s presence is still easy to spot.

Main Street still gives Mooreland its grid: the railroad divides the north side of the original townsite, while the streets run across a broad, flat landscape. Farming, wheat, grain handling, and other services for the surrounding country built the local economy. Today the town’s school, city utilities, parks, July 4 celebration, and Christmas in the Park keep the calendar close to home. Mooreland feels like an Oklahoma railroad town that kept its agricultural job after the tracks stopped being the whole story.
