Tucked into a high valley on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Mora offers a quiet, rural lifestyle in northern New Mexico. With a population of around 550 residents at an elevation of 7,180 feet, it feels peaceful and secluded while remaining within reach of larger hubs. State Road 518 cuts right through the valley, putting Las Vegas about 30 miles to the south and Taos roughly 45 miles to the north over the mountains. Mora also acts as the community center for a string of neighboring mountain settlements, including Cleveland, Holman, and Chacon.

The valley has deep agricultural roots dating back through centuries of Native American, Spanish, and frontier history. During the Santa Fe Trail days, local farmers supplied grain and livestock to nearby Fort Union, and you can still see that heritage in the historic stone gristmills and quiet pastureland. Today, people settle here for the open space, cooler summer temperatures, and easy access to the surrounding national forest.
