Mora, NM

Mora, also known as Santa Gertrudis de lo de Mora, is the seat of Mora County in northern New Mexico. The 2020 census counted 547 residents. The community sits at about 7,180 feet in the Mora River valley along the eastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. State Road 518 runs through the center, with Las Vegas about 30 miles south and Taos about 47 miles north over the mountains. Mora proper, Cleveland, Chacon, and Holman form a chain of plazas and settlements, each with its own local center.

The valley carries several layers of New Mexico history. Ute, Navajo, and Apache people used the region before Spanish settlement, and the Mora name appears tied to early settler families. The Santa Fe Trail brought trade through the valley after 1821, while Fort Union created demand for hay, flour, grain, and livestock after it opened nearby in 1851. Mora's county-seat role, river farms, mountain roads, and old trail routes still meet in the same high valley. It is a place where the landscape holds the town together across separate plazas.
