Moreland, GA

Moreland is a Coweta County town that moved south toward the railroad. The community first gathered around Mt. Zion Methodist Church, built in 1843 for farmers who came through the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery; when the Atlanta and LaGrange Railroad arrived in 1852, the stop was called Puckett Station. A new depot in 1888 helped shape the present town, named for railroad physician and investor Dr. John F. Moreland. The old mill and square now hold the Hometown Heritage Museum, with Moreland's literary story close by: Erskine Caldwell was born here and Lewis Grizzard grew up here. Moreland is a rail-and-writing town with a strong Coweta County backstory.
