Morgan's Point, TX

Morgan's Point is a Harris County city at the mouth of the Houston Ship Channel on Galveston Bay, about 30 miles southeast of Houston. The 2020 census counted 273 residents. The peninsula is near La Porte and Baytown, with the city limits reaching into Galveston Bay. Colonel James Morgan gave the point its name after receiving land there, and the settlement was caught up in the Texas Revolution; Mexican forces destroyed the early community during that conflict. The same shoreline later drew Houston families looking for summer houses and Gulf breezes.

That resort era is still visible in the Morgan's Point National Historic District. The Carriage House now serves as City Hall, while the Governor Ross S. Sterling mansion stands across the street among early residences, cemetery grounds, and other historic properties. The Bay Ridge Park Association laid out a summer community in 1893, dividing the land into long lots so families could reach the beach. Nearby Sylvan Beach and the ship channel give the city a mix of old bayfront houses, industrial traffic, and working-water geography. Morgan's Point is small in population but carries Texas history in its name, shoreline, and surviving buildings.
