Morocco, IN

Morocco is a Newton County town in Beaver Township, laid out in 1851 and named after the North African country after an early traveler returned in Moroccan red boots. Its streets sit in the agricultural northwestern Indiana landscape, with U.S. Route 41's former corridor helping show the town's older commercial form. Morocco's history is unusually visible in two National Register properties: the Scott-Lucas House, a 1912 Craftsman-era home now used as a house museum, and the Seller's Standard Station and Pullman Diner, a roadside complex built in stages from 1930 onward.

North Newton School Corporation has its district office in Morocco, and Morocco Elementary keeps the school connection in town; North Newton Junior-Senior High School serves older students nearby. The Pullman diner and service station recall a time when Route 41 travelers stopped for fuel, food, and repairs, while the Scott-Lucas House gives the town a domestic side. Farms, school traffic, and the old highway line still structure the daily map. Morocco is an Indiana town where a red-boot name, two preserved buildings, and a school district meet.
