Moroni, UT

Moroni is a city in northern Sanpete County, where the San Pitch River bends between Nephi and Manti. Families from Nephi settled here in 1859, first calling the place Sanpitch, Mego, Little Rome, and Duck Springs before the name Moroni stuck. Flooding pushed the early settlement away from the river in 1862, and the town spread across the low rolling hills. The 2020 census counted 1,544 residents. Irrigation canals, livestock, and sawmills shaped the valley's early work, while the Sanpete Valley Railroad made Moroni a trading and mail stop after it arrived in 1885.

The town still has a strong old-center feel around the Moroni Tabernacle and the 1891 Moroni Opera House, a large venue for a small agricultural city. Moroni's historic cannery also tells a practical local story: it later housed city fire engines, an ambulance, and water department operations. The city's recreation calendar centers on ball fields, pickleball, and summer celebrations, giving the place a modern rhythm alongside the old waterworks, railroad, and meetinghouses.
