Morristown, IN

Morristown is a Shelby County town in Hanover Township, platted by Samuel Morrison in 1828. Its post office dates to 1834, and the Junction Railroad’s arrival in 1866–67 gave the town its first major growth push. The Junction Railroad Depot, built in 1867–68, handled grain, livestock, and passengers, then served as the local rail center until about 1950. It was moved in 1976 to save it from demolition and remains on the National Register. U.S. 52 now provides the main regional bearing, but the depot’s loading platform and grain-elevator design show how the town once connected farm production to the wider market.

Morristown’s current map is compact and practical. Morristown Elementary and Morristown Junior-Senior High School serve local students, while the Velma Wortman Morristown Branch of Shelby County Public Library on East Main Street offers youth programs and a seed library. Those institutions keep the town’s civic activity close to Main Street, with Shelbyville handling larger county-level destinations. The quick local read is a town built around an old shipping point, still using its schools and library as everyday markers.
