Morton Grove, IL

Forest-preserve land follows the North Branch of the Chicago River through Morton Grove, placing roughly 400 protected acres and the regional North Branch Trail inside a village of about five square miles. The trail's paved and unpaved routes are used for cycling, running, and walking through Linne Woods and neighboring preserves. This green corridor has roots in an earlier local economy: Morton Grove's greenhouse industry began in 1885, and Poehlmann Brothers later operated what village historical materials describe as the country's largest greenhouse business. The railroad also shaped the community's name and still matters to daily travel. A new Morton Grove station opened in December 2025 on Metra's Milwaukee District North Line, replacing the former building while keeping commuter service toward Chicago. Morton Grove recorded 25,297 residents in 2020. For 2020 through 2024, 38 percent of residents were foreign-born and 51 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home.

The same estimates put owner occupancy at 85 percent, the median owner-occupied value at $389,100, mortgage-holder costs at $2,571 a month, median gross rent at $2,164, and median household income at $111,116. Nearly one quarter of residents were age 65 or older, and workers averaged about 28 minutes of travel to work. Harrer Park supplies ball fields, courts, a walking path, pavilion, museum, and a seasonal pool with lap lanes, diving boards, slides, climbing wall, tot pool, and spray area. Morton Grove Public Library opens every day, stays open until 9 p.m. four nights a week, offers a reservable Cricut-equipped Creative Space, and carries its summer StoryWalk into Linne Woods.
