Mound City, MO

Mound City is a Holt County city in northwest Missouri, near the interchange of Interstate 29 and Missouri Route 118, with State Highway 59 through town. The 2020 census counted 1,004 residents. The city began as North Point: Galen Crow's store stood by Davis Creek in the 1850s, the post office moved there in 1855, and Mound City was incorporated in 1857. The name refers to the mounds near the original town site.

Rail and water shaped the next century. A railroad spur arrived in 1880, the public library opened in 1909, and the city built waterworks, lights, and a sewer system as it grew. Today the library on East Sixth Street offers story time and regular hours, while city services, schools, parks, and local businesses keep the town's daily map compact. Mound City also sits near Big Lake and Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge, tying the community to northwest Missouri's wetland and migratory-bird country. It is a highway town with a creek, a library, and a long civic memory.
