Mounds, OK

Mounds is a Creek County town about 11 miles south of Sapulpa on U.S. 75A, in the southern Tulsa-area work network. The 2020 census counted 936 residents. Mounds Public Schools, the Julia Crowder McClellan Memorial Library, town hall, local businesses, and the regional water district handle the everyday basics. Farm roads and the highway carry residents toward Sapulpa and Tulsa, while the town's own school and library keep a local center in place.

The post office opened in 1895 as Posey, named for Creek poet Alexander L. Posey. It moved five miles southwest in 1898 and took the Mounds name from nearby twin hills. The railroad arrived around 1900, turning the town into a shipping point for cattle, grain, and later Glenn Pool oil. The oil boom faded, but agriculture, commuting, and small-town services remained. Mounds is an eastern Oklahoma town whose rail-and-oil past still helps make sense of its location, while the school, library, highway, and daily trips to the county seat organize the week.
