Mount Aetna, PA

Mount Aetna is a small Tulpehocken Township CDP along Pennsylvania Route 501 near the Lebanon County line, named for Sicily’s Mount Etna. The name is volcanic; the setting is Pennsylvania farm country, with the road carrying through a settlement that sits near the county border. Most of the local story is church and crossroads rather than a separate municipal center. Mill Street still carries that old church-centered shape.

St. John’s of Mount Aetna gives the place its clearest historical thread. The first church was a log structure erected in 1846 on land donated by village founder Peter Woleber; early records were written in German script, and the church became part of the village’s Pennsylvania German story. Route 501 ties Mount Aetna to surrounding Tulpehocken communities, while the church and cemetery keep the older settlement visible. The local scoop is a place named after a Sicilian volcano, built around a nineteenth-century church, and still read from the road between Berks and Lebanon counties.
