Mount Airy sits right on the ridge where Carroll and Frederick counties meet, which gives the town a unique layout. Because the county line runs straight through the area, your address determines whether your home falls under Carroll or Frederick county services and public school districts. Downtown Main Street serves as the walkable center with locally owned restaurants, neighborhood shops, and community offices, while the interchange near Route 27 and Interstate 70 provides grocery stores, drive-thrus, and big-box shopping. It is a convenient home base for commuters heading toward Baltimore, Washington, or Frederick, though traffic along Route 27 can get sluggish during weekday rush hours.

The town grew up around the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the 1830s, when steam locomotives had to haul cars up the steep summit. Local lore says a brakeman suggested the name Mount Airy after catching the chilly breeze at the crest of the hill. That rail heritage still defines the historic district. Main Street is lined with preserved Victorian architecture, the restored train depot, and a bright red caboose that serves as a visitor center. The old rail corridor has since been converted into walking paths, keeping that heritage woven into daily strolls.

Parks and local gatherings keep the community closely knit. Watkins Park is the main hub, featuring sports fields, a playground, and paved walking loops that link into downtown by a scenic boardwalk and trail. The town also maintains several other green spaces, including the sprawling 88-acre Windy Ridge Park. Throughout the year, residents gather for weekly food truck rallies, seasonal farmers markets, summer concert series, Oktoberfest, and holiday celebrations down Main Street.
