Mount Calvary, WI

Mount Calvary is a Fond du Lac County village in east-central Wisconsin’s Holyland, a cluster of communities shaped by Catholic parishes, farms, and German-speaking immigrant settlement. Missionary Casper Rehrl chose the hill for its view and placed a wooden cross there; houses began gathering at the base in the 1840s, and a parish followed in 1849. The hill gave the village both its name and its first landmark.

St. Lawrence Seminary grew from the friary and Latin school established in the 1850s, and the seminary remains the village’s most recognizable institution. Mount Calvary also has village hall, local board meetings, water and sewer services, a post-office history, and the nearby roads linking Fond du Lac, St. Cloud, Johnsburg, and the rest of the Holyland. Village Hall sits on Fond du Lac Street. The old Calvary Station railroad connection has faded, but the religious and school landscape remains central. Mount Calvary’s local scoop is that the hilltop cross became a village, parish, and school community all at once.
