Mount Ida, AR

Mount Ida is the Montgomery County seat on the South Fork of the Ouachita River, a small courthouse town with a surprisingly big mineral identity. It was founded in 1842 and incorporated in 1890; silver mining brought a boom in the 1880s, while ranching, poultry, timber, and small-scale farming shaped the surrounding county. U.S. Route 270 and Arkansas Highway 27 pass through town, linking the courthouse square to the Ouachita hills and the communities beyond.

Quartz is the thing visitors most associate with Mount Ida, and the local landscape earns that reputation. Crystal mines and the Crystal Vista Recreation Area draw collectors into the hills, while the Ouachita National Forest and nearby Lake Ouachita bring hiking, fishing, boating, and cabin country. The courthouse town also serves as the county’s practical center. The town still handles county business, schools, churches, and everyday services for a broad rural area. Mount Ida feels like a place where a county seat, a mineral trade, and mountain recreation share the same main street.
