Mount Vernon, GA

Mount Vernon is the county seat of Montgomery County, set east of the Oconee River in southeast Georgia’s upper Coastal Plain. The county dates to 1793, and the city took its name from George Washington’s Virginia home. Mount Vernon became the county seat in 1813, giving the courthouse town a role that has lasted through changes in the surrounding farm and timber country. The river forms the Montgomery–Wheeler county line nearby, while the wider region sits in the Vidalia sweet-onion belt.

Education gives the city an outsized presence for its size. Brewton-Parker Christian University grew from a Baptist-supported school founded in 1904 and remains a four-year campus in Mount Vernon, with the Montgomery County school system serving students from preschool through high school. The college’s Historic Village preserves two antebellum log houses and gives visitors a tangible stop among the county’s older places. County offices, school traffic, campus life, and trips toward Ailey or the Oconee corridor all meet in the same small-town grid. Mount Vernon is a working county seat with an academic neighbor.
