Mountain Lakes, NH

Mountain Lakes is a census-designated place spread across the New Hampshire towns of Haverhill and Bath, with 504 residents in 2020. The Haverhill portion is an independent district with its own water system, Planning Board, recreation program, three-member elected board of commissioners, and annual district meeting. Its two namesake lakes were constructed on Waterman Brook, a north-flowing tributary of the Wild Ammonoosuc River. The CDP extends north into Bath as far as the Wild Ammonoosuc and the Swiftwater Covered Bridge.

The district's 360 completed homes include both full-time and seasonal households, so the local map changes across the year. Water service, land-use decisions, and recreation are handled through the district itself, while the surrounding towns provide the larger regional setting. Mountain Lakes is therefore more than a neighborhood label: it is a small government unit with elected oversight and infrastructure of its own, organized around two constructed lakes and the brook that links them to the Wild Ammonoosuc. The nearby covered bridge marks the northern edge of a place whose civic boundaries follow water, roads, and a distinct local administration.
