About Mountain Road
Mountain Road is a Halifax County census-designated place along Virginia Route 360, with the Town of Halifax at its eastern edge. The 2020 population was 1,009. The useful local distinction is the road itself: it carries the CDP to Halifax, the county seat, where Mountain Road leaves the courthouse square and runs west toward the county countryside. Its name comes from White Oak Mountain.
In the town, the Mountain Road Historic District preserves houses, churches, old school buildings, and large properties built from the early 19th century through the mid-20th century. The Halifax Courthouse has served court purposes since 1803, the current building dates to 1838, and the road's architecture walking tour includes the 1828 Masonic Hall, Halifax Methodist Church, and Chaffin House at 110 Mountain Road. As of 2026, a Route 360 sidewalk project near the Halifax War Memorial is in design, with construction estimated for 2028. For Mountain Road, the map is a corridor: a census area at the county-seat edge, a historic road running out from the square, and a present-day route being fitted for better pedestrian access.
