About Mountain View CDP (Cibola County)

Mountain View is a census-designated place in Cibola County, New Mexico, on the Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation. It sits in the county's high country at about 7,126 feet, four miles southwest of New Mexico State Road 53 and El Morro National Monument. The CDP uses Ramah, 87321, as its postal address, and its 2.07 square miles are all land. This is a high-elevation place where the reservation, nearby monument country, and long roads do most of the geographic work.

The name is recent in Census terms. In 2010 the same location was listed as Pinehill CDP; Mountain View first appeared as the CDP name before the 2020 census. The community also has an important school history: a Bureau of Indian Affairs day school opened there in 1943 for Ramah Navajo children, initially serving first through third grades, before a dormitory opened near Ramah in 1954 and the Mountain View school closed. The local scoop is that Mountain View is a small reservation community whose modern map label sits on top of a much older Ramah Navajo education and land story.
